Fearon uses literary and visual arts to communicate – in a structured, creative and accessible form – insights gleaned from stories shared by Black mothers and their families. Her publications have appeared in several scholarly journals, including Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education, Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie, and Journal of African American Women and Girls in Education. She remembers the screech of the subway, the bustle of shoppers at the Eaton Centre and wearing her winter coat to bed in a desperate attempt to keep warm. My mother also recalls being placed two grades behind at school and the grade 10 English teacher that falsely accused her of plagiarism. As early as the 1800s, policies were used to refuse admission of Black children into white schools. We had discriminatory laws upheld by the courts that legally enforced and maintained racially segregated schools.
