<image:caption>Stephanie Fearon joins York University’s Faculty of Education as the inaugural assistant professor of Black thriving and education. Her research draws on Black storytelling traditions to explore the ways that Black mothers and educational institutions partner to support Black student well-being. Fearon uses literary and visual arts to communicate – in a structured, creative and accessible form – insights gleaned from stories shared by Black mothers and their families. Her publications have appeared in several scholarly journals, including Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education, Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue canadienne de sociologie, and Journal of African American Women and Girls in Education. Fearon has worked in public education systems for nearly 15 years, assuming teaching and leadership positions in France, Guadeloupe and Canada.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My doctoral thesis uses storytelling to investigate the relationships between Black mothers and school officials. The study presents insights obtained from 10 in-depth interviews with African Caribbean mothers living in Toronto. Participants shared personal stories to articulate their understanding of Black motherwork and its impact on their relationships with school officials.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From Australia to Zimbabwe, people worldwide are coming together to strategize about and implement measures to secure women’s rights. In cities across Spain millions of women workers marked International Women’s Day with an unprecedented strike demanding gender equality. Icelandic women’s organizations mounted demonstrations outside parliament to secure legislation that guaranteed equal pay for women. Social media has been used to highlight infringements on women’s rights.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Partnering for Black Student Well-Being: A Teacher’s Journey</image:title>
<image:caption>On April 21, 1971, my mother left Jamaica as a teenager and reunited with my grandmother in Toronto. She remembers the screech of the subway, the bustle of shoppers at the Eaton Centre and wearing her winter coat to bed in a desperate attempt to keep warm. My mother also recalls being placed two grades behind at school and the grade 10 English teacher that falsely accused her of plagiarism. The teacher yelled, “How could you possibly do so well on a poetry assignment without cheating?”</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Anti-Black Racism in Education and Black Students Navigating the Pandemic</image:title>
<image:caption>Institutionalized racism has a long history in the Canadian education system and continues to create barriers for Black, Indigenous and racialized students. As early as the 1800s, policies were used to refuse admission of Black children into white schools. We had discriminatory laws upheld by the courts that legally enforced and maintained racially segregated schools. Literature, reports and personal narratives document the many ways early legacies of racism persist and negatively impact the present-day schooling experiences of Black children.</image:caption>
